In my last post, we talked about the first reason most people let their fitness and nutrition lapse during the holidays: cost. In this post, I’m going to discuss the second objection and why giving in to this reason may just put you farther back than any other when it comes to your fitness and health.
Reason # 2 is one we are all familiar with: poor eating habits. The parties…it’s like they’re endless! There are get-togethers, gatherings, cookie swaps etc. It just seems like you are fighting a losing battle!
What we find is that most people never quite feel ready. When all aspects of their health and fitness are not lined up, exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress, they just don’t ever seem ready to being their training or to try and keep somewhat consistent.
This is NOT the right approach however. Being proactive before New Year’s Resolutions can help increase motivation, help increase and tone muscles while also minimizing holiday damage. We often find that when people are consistent training they are more likely to make at least somewhat better nutrition choices. I’m sure you have experienced this as well. You come home from the gym and are less likely to throw it all away by gorging. Contrast that to a poor weekend filled with junk and you’re more likely to say “whatever, I’ve already screwed up”. The training not only burns calories and builds strength but it also adds a little accountability as well.
Not starting a training program because you aren’t in shape yet or aren’t perfect right now is like not going to the doctor because you’re still feeling a little sick! The sooner you begin the closer you are to getting better!
Finally, I think one of the most important points to make is that yes, nutrition is ultimately the most important factor for weight and fat loss, however research is clear that exercise is super important for preventing weight gain and helping with diet adherence. What does that mean? It means that it is the perfect Holiday Damage Control! Even if you don’t drop a ton of weight it would be AWESOME to head in to 2017 moving better, feeling better, stronger without the holiday weight gain!
